4. The Big 12 madness continues

It’s not even close to March yet, but madness is drifting in the air in late fall. Perhaps the one game that stood out in terms of meaning was the meeting between West Virginia and Oklahoma State.

Both teams had much to play for as four teams in the Big 12 (given different scenarios that play out) would be in the conference championship game.

That number dwindled down even more because Oklahoma State’s comeback 45-41 win proved to end West Virginia’s hopes at a march to the College Football Playoff. The Mountaineers, however, are still in contention for the conference championship.

The one caveat is, though, that West Virginia will have to lick its wounds and rebound quickly as it eyes a pivotal matchup with the conference-leading Oklahoma.

The madness gets even crazier when taking into consideration that there could still be a three-way tie for the second spot in the Big 12. This only result if Oklahoma wins next week and Kansas somehow pulls off a surprise upset against Texas. If this were to occur a three-way tie would persist between Texas, West Virginia and Iowa State.

Currently, the Big 12 isn’t included in the playoff field should the season end today. However, if one of the top-four teams lose at some point within the next two weeks, it will throw the College Football Playoff into flux.

A one-loss team such as Oklahoma is on the outside looking in, but it has the chance to enter the playoff field if it wins out and it gets some help from the teams in front of it.
