2019 NFL Draft: Projected First Round after NFL Combine
Much like Montez Sweat, Michigan’s Rashan Gary is another absurd athlete whose numbers didn’t always match his athletic prowess. Gary was one of the biggest freaks at the combine this week, producing an eye-popping 4.58 40-yard dash at 277 pounds. Many expected an eye-popping performance from the Wolverines defensive lineman, but I don’t think anyone expected that.
Gary wasn’t a productive pass rusher in Ann Arbor, managing just 9.5 sacks in his 34 game Michigan career. The potential is there for more, but he isn’t likely to be an elite pass rusher at the next level. He does have coveted versatility, though, with his ability to play end or tackle.
I think his best spot long term will be moving inside to defensive tackle in a 4-3 scheme, but he could also play end well in a 3-4 defense. His quick first step would be tough to deal with for interior lineman at the next level.
Jacksonville might be disappointed to miss out on Murray and Haskins, and could give hard look at Missouri’s Drew Lock here in order to fill their need at the position. Blake Bortles’ days with the team are numbered, and they’ll be looking for a long-term solution this offseason.
Bortles’ play was a big reason the Jaguars fell far from an AFC Championship berth in 2017, and while you’re never really just a quarterback away from contending, I’ve long thought the Jaguars would prefer to target a veteran signal-caller in free agency instead of entrusting their talented roster with a rookie.
That thought seems to hold merit now, with the report that they are likely to come to terms with former Eagles Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles at the start of free agency.
