UCLA Football: Top 5 spring 2019 breakout candidates
Everyone expected Dorian Thompson-Robinson to break out as a true freshman, but he never really had momentum. It wasn’t fair to throw him right to the wolves, but the Bruins didn’t have much of an option, especially with Wilton Speight injured and Devon Modster transferring in the offseason leading up to 2018.
Thompson-Robinson finished with 1,311 yards and seven touchdowns with four interceptions and a 58 percent completion rate, but he wasn’t quite the star everyone had anticipated.
Now he’s getting a true opportunity. Speight is now gone and the keys to the quarterback position are in his hands. All he has to do is take control and show more leadership skills — even though he’s just a sophomore — which will turn into success on the field.
Thompson-Robinson has the arm talent, running ability and there’s a reason he was so highly-touted out of high school.
No, Thompson-Robinson hasn’t broken out yet and he’s the easiest choice on the team to pick as a breakout candidate, but this is his year to prove himself. Will he become the next great UCLA quarterback? With some tutelage from Chip Kelly, that’s a serious possibility.
