After redshirting in 2018, Deneric Prince entered the offseason as an unknown. He carried the ball twice for 21 yards in the Aggies’ opener against Northwestern State and spent the remainder of the year as a redshirt on the scout team. That all changed this spring.

With projected starter Jashaun Corbin nursing an injury this past April, Prince made waves in the Aggie backfield. The former Manvel high school phenom exploded in the annual Maroon and White game, nearly surpassing 100 all-purpose yards in the contest.

During the scrimmage, the 6-1, 210-pound tailback showed a rare blend of power and speed out of the backfield. Despite playing most of the game with three true freshmen blocking on the line, Prince ran hard through the trenches, breaking tackles and often reaching the second and third level of the defense. He also showed off his elusiveness, catching a flare route in the flat and torching a pair of defenders in space prior to stepping out for a 21-yard gain in the second half.

Outside of Corbin, the fight for a reserve role is up for grabs this month as Prince, freshman Isiah Spiller, and UCF transfer Cordarrian Richardson will all be vying for a spot in the rotation.

If Prince can duplicate his performance from the spring, the job could be his to lose.
