Will physical rushing attack return?

The signature of the David Shaw tenure at Stanford has been the physical rushing attack. Yes, he’s produced quarterbacks like Andrew Luck and elusive backs like Christian McCaffrey, but the foundation has always been grounded in the power run game.

That is why 2018 was so disappointing. The usually-reliable run game finished 11th in the Pac-12, and 123rd nationally. However, there is reason for optimism entering 2019. Cameron Scarlett and Trevor Speights both got significant touches while Bryce Love dealt with injuries last year. While losing Love isn’t ideal, the tandem replacing him is ready and capable.

Another reason for optimism in on the offensive line. Much like at running back, last year was an injury riddled year up front. It was a detriment to 2018, but it becomes a blessing in 2019. Despite replacing four of five starters up front, there’s significant experience to go around due to the amount of playing time opened up by injuries.

Leading the charge will be quarterback KJ Costello. As injuries plagued the offense, Costello was the stabilizing force. He threw for 3,540 yards and 29 touchdowns a year ago, and is entering only his junior season.

While the offense should be boosted by experience and, hopefully, a healthier year, the ceiling of this offense will be determined by Costello.
