Clemson Football: 3 keys to victory vs. Texas A&M in Week 2
1. Don’t break in the secondary
In one of his best games of the season, Kellen Mond torched the Clemson secondary in the 2018 matchup. Mond threw for 430 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
And here’s some bad news for Clemson: Mond looks even better this year, his second season under the tutelage of Jimbo Fisher.
In three quarters against Texas State, Mond showed off his strength and accuracy while completing all the throws – from the easy check-downs to the deep balls after being flushed out of the pocket. Several of his throws belonged on SportsCenter.
Without a doubt, Mond will be the best quarterback the Tigers will face in the regular season. The Aggies will also field several tall, athletic receivers that gave some of the best secondaries in college football fits last year.
That combination could be deadly for Clemson.
Mond will probably put up big numbers, but the Tigers need to make plays – maybe snag an interception or play great third down defense. Bend but don’t break doesn’t sound like the type of defense Brent Venables likes to play, but it’s often necessary when playing great quarterbacks.
The Tigers’ secondary needs to prevent big plays and take advantage of every mistakes Mond makes to deliver the win for Tiger Nation.
