ACC Football Power Rankings, Week 5: Mack Brown train derailed?
By Dante Pryor
The Seminoles won Saturday, and a lot was wrong with that victory, but one thing went right and they did what they’ve done so far this season: They jumped out to an early lead. They went up on the Louisville Cardinals 21-0 just to do what they’ve also done so far this season: Give up their lead. The Cardinals scored 24 unanswered points and were ahead 24-21 in the fourth quarter.
Then behind Alex Hornibrook — no, not a typo — the Seminoles scored two fourth quarter touchdowns on their way to a 35-24 victory. That one thing they did right, the Seminoles didn’t quit. I can’t say if this is the start of the Seminoles’ recovery, but it was good to see them not lie down. They get NC State at home next week and maybe they put an entire game together.
The Hokies were idle this week, and their drop in the rankings is due to the teams ahead of them playing well in wins, or not playing poorly enough in losses to drop significantly. There are still some glaring issues in Blacksburg, and we’ll see where they are when they host the Duke Blue Devils at Lane Stadium.
There’s a lot to be confused about in Raleigh. They destroyed the directional Carolina schools, and lost their first tough game against West Virginia — if you consider the Mountaineers to be tough this year. Then they sputtered their way to an 11-point win against, you guessed it, Ball State — yes, they do in fact have a football team, and they are the Cardinals. We’ll see which NC State stands up against a confident Florida State team next Saturday night at Bowden Field.
