ACC Football Power Rankings, Week 5: Mack Brown train derailed?
By Dante Pryor
The Cardinals dropped one to the Seminoles this past Saturday, and they should have. They aren’t nearly as talented as the Seminoles, but maybe they should give the ‘Noles some of their try-hard attitude. This wasn’t one of Louisville’s better games this young season as it turned the ball over twice and had seven penalties four 54 yards. The Cardinals gave up 140 yards and only 3.4 yards per carry which should serve them well against Boston College next week, but the signs are encouraging in Louisville if you are a Cardinal fan.
Is the Mack Brown train getting derailed? The Tar Heels have lost two in a row and are steadily sliding down the rankings. The Appalachian State Mountaineers won the “so-our-former-coach-wasn’t-good-enough-for-you-bowl” in Chapel Hill Saturday. It was inevitable they would lose some of these close games, and this one was complete with a blocked field goal to end it — which is so App State.
Sam Howell looked like a freshman, at times, throwing two interceptions, but much like the team right below them in the rankings, the Tar Heels are playing hard for their coach even if they don’t win many more games — like the ‘L’ they are going to take when they host Clemson next week.
It’s unclear what to call the Hurricanes performance against Central Michigan. Were they playing down to their competition? It wasn’t a trap game because they’re off next week before they Virginia Tech comes to Hard Rock. Maybe, it was just a bad game, but there’s a positive in their worst offensive performance of the season: They won. Sometimes having enough to win when you don’t play well is a good take away. They have a lot to work on before Oct. 5, but the Hurricanes should feel good about grinding out a game in which they didn’t play well.
Duke was off this week ahead of their Friday night match up against the Virginia Tech Hokies Friday night. We don’t have much of a gauge of how good the the Blue Devils are. They beat North Carolina A&T and Middle Tennessee State and lost to Alabama. We’ll have a gauge on the ‘Devils when they go to Blacksburg.
