ACC Football Power Rankings, Week 6: Can someone wake Clemson up, please?
By Dante Pryor
The Cardinals were off this week ahead of their game against Boston College. This gives = head coach Scott Satterfield an opportunity to get quarterback Jawon Pass healthy and decide whether he or Malik Cunningham is going to get the ball the rest of the way for Louisville.
They need to know because their schedule doesn’t get any easier after Boston College. They visit Winston-Salem to take on Wake Forest before hosting both Clemson and Virginia.
The Miami Hurricanes were also off this week. They host a struggling Virginia Tech squad before playing the Virginia Cavaliers. They had an outstanding defensive performance against Central Michigan while the offense sputtered. They need to get running back DeeJay Dallas going to protect young quarterback Jarren Williams. He has shown himself made of sterner stuff this season, but if you can take the load off his shoulders you have to.
The Seminoles are the high risers this week moving all the way from No. 11 last week. They weren’t by any means perfect last week, but they took advantage of NC State’s instability at quarterback to come away with a 31-13 win at a noisy Doak-Campbell Stadium.
Penalties crept up again for the ‘Noles, but the Wolfpack were unable to take advantage of them. However, the Seminoles forced two turnovers and had zero. NC State’s talented defensive line got eight sacks against the Seminoles which were a combination of Hornibrook holding the ball too long and the Wolfpack’s talent upfront.
The Seminoles have their measuring stick game when they travel to Death Valley East to take on the Clemson Tigers on Oct. 12. Trevor Lawrence and Co. won’t be asleep for this one. FSU has to be better in the trenches on both sides of the ball to have any chance.
It seems as if they bought into Willie Taggart’s message about trusting the man next to you and playing for your brother. That will be tested against Clemson in two weeks.
There are few things that are a sure thing in the ACC, but one is the Pitt Panthers are connoisseurs of roller-coasters. Their fans are treated to a different type of coaster every season. You had the we upset Clemson loop-de-loop, the we are 7-6 but won the division dive and this season you rode the Pitt Special and the skin the ‘Hens curved coaster. It was a forgone conclusion there might be some let down, but this was an FCS team.
Granted there were a lot of players injured for the Panthers in this game including quarterback Kenny Pickett, but Delaware’s mascot is an egg laying blue chicken — I’m just saying.
Maybe, Delaware exposed something Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi needs to be aware of: They aren’t super talented when starters get hurt. If Delaware exposed that, it’s a safe bet Duke’s David Cutcliffe saw that, too, and will have the Blue Devils ready when they host the Panthers on Saturday night.
