ACC Football Power Rankings, Week 8: Clemson back on track
By Dante Pryor
“We’re trying getting better everyday. We’re taking it …” — wait there’s another Geoff Collins year zero quote? “We are in the infancy stages of the development of this program. The players are wanting to do the right thing, and we are coaching it everyday.”
I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m belittling the Yellow Jackets. Collins has a monumental task ahead of him. We aren’t talking about just switching coaching regimes; this is a change of offensive philosophy. It’s not just terminology like Chad Morris’ spread versus Sonny Dykes’ spread. Collins is transitioning from the triple-option to a multiple formation pro-style offense. Every level of the offense has to be different. So, since they’re going to be at the bottom of the rankings, we might as well have some fun.
On a positive note, the ‘Jackets had a 200-yard passer and 100-yard rusher in the same game for the first time this season and eclipsed 20 points for the third time this season. They are in the infancy stages, but there’s been some good signs so far. There might not be anymore wins for the Yellow Jackets this season, but they are playing better.
There isn’t a team in this conference that needed a bye week more than the Boston College Eagles. They’ve lost two in a row by one possession. In their three losses, they’ve given up almost 40 points per contest, including 48 points to Kansas — not a typo, folks. Offensively, they’ve been solid, but it’s the defense — an Eagles staple — that isn’t playing well this season.
The rest of their schedule is daunting, to say the least. If they don’t defend better, they are going to have a difficult time finding wins the rest of the year.
The Wolfpack need to figure out their quarterback situation. Their defense is suffocating, but it isn’t going to matter much if they can’t score the football. They are very young at the skill positions, so they are growing. They got the win last week against the Orange, and that was due to their eight sacks of Syracuse quarterback Tommy DeVito.
They’ve played three quarterbacks this year, and it seems as if they’ve settled on Bailey Hockman. Dave Doeren might have a bit of a rebuild after losing so much talent on offense the last couple of years, so he might have to ride with a young quarterback let him take his lumps and see where he is next season.
