Washington State Football: 3 takeaways from Cheez-It Bowl loss to Air Force

3. Playing keep-away works
Time of possession is regarded as one of the more overrated stats in football, but that doesn’t apply to the Air Force Academy. Dominating time of possession means the Falcons have the ground game going. If the ground game’s going, and they are able to put the ball in the endzone, that’s trouble for the opposition; that’s exactly what the Air Force Falcons were able to do.
The Falcons dominated time of possession in this game. The Cougars had the ball for a mere 16:31 in this game.
The Falcons had their running game humming tonight. Led by running back Kadin Remsberg, Air Force ran the ball a whopping 69 times for 371 yards and a 5.4 yards per carry average. They scored on five of their eight possessions. Most importantly, four of those five scores were touchdowns. The Air Force are a take what the defense gives you type of offense. They are content — as they were on Friday — with taking 3-5 yard runs all night and hitting on a chunk play or two.
Their style of play lends itself to a close game now and then. They were more than happy pounding on a smallish Cougar defense all night.
