Virginia Tech Football: 3 keys to victory vs. Kentucky in Belk Bowl
2. Create complex offensive scenarios
The Hokies have a tough task ahead of them with the Wildcats’ defense, who ranks 12th in the nation in points per game (18.4). From the defensive line to the secondary, the Wildcats do not have many weaknesses to exploit.
Occasionally, the Hokies will need to go more creative with their run and play-action schemes. The Hokies know how to get points on the board as they rank 51st in the nation in points per game (30.9).
The Hokies have a diverse set of offensive weapons at their disposal in dual-threat quarterback Hendon Hooker, running back Deshawn McClease, and receivers Tre Turner and Damon Hazelton Jr. Kentucky is more able to stop a stale offense that specializes in runs up the middle. Having Hooker play in an RPO-style will give the Hokies more opportunities to drive the ball down the field.
In nine games, Hooker has thrown for 1,445 yards, 11 touchdowns, and only two interceptions on 87 completions (out of 140 attempts). He has also rushed for 306 yards and five touchdowns on 111 rushes. Hooker even disrupts the ball between Turner (542 yards and four touchdowns on 33 receptions) and Hazelton Jr. (506 yards and seven touchdowns on 30 receptions).
This game is perfect for the Hokies to create some trick plays to get a huge advantage at a potentially critical point.
