Alabama Football: Top 5 moments of Tua Tagovailoa’s Tide career
1. Second-and-26
Everyone knows the story. Tua Tagovailoa replaces Jalen Hurts at halftime of the 2017 National Championship against Georgia and leads them to their 17th National Championship in school history. However, a few things are forgotten about this game that makes the story even more dramatic.
Before the two teams even made it to overtime, Tagovailoa had led the Crimson Tide on a drive starting at the Alabama 35 yard line. Thanks to a few runs from himself, Najee Harris, and a face mask penalty on the Bulldogs, he set kicker Andy Pappanastos with a 36-yard field goal. He brutally missed it as time expired, sending the game into overtime.
Secondly, before the famous pass to Smith, Tagovailoa took an incredibly horrible sack that lost 16 yards. He tried to scramble around and find room to make a play with his feet but ended up just going backwards and making the situation worse.
Luckily for him, he made an amazing play less than a minute later and had Nick Saban rushing the field in ecstasy after wanting to smash (another) headset shortly before.
