3. Kendal Briles

The Razorbacks caused quite a coup when Sam Pittman hired Kendal Briles. There’s still some controversy because of the Baylor scandal, but this hire shows that Pittman isn’t going to try to use an offensive system similar to the vanilla system Georgia employed while he was an offensive line coach.

It seems as if Pittman wants to spread the field and throw it around a bit. The advantage to this mode of thought is simple: the turnaround shouldn’t be as long because former head coach Chad Morris recruited personnel that fits what Briles wants to do.

This is an advantage for Feleipe Franks as well. Many of the spread concepts the Florida Gators run are similar to what Briles wants to do. He will take advantage of Franks’ big arm and ability to run zone-read concepts.

Franks being a bit rough around the edges should not be an issue for Briles who has shown the ability to develop quarterbacks. Brice Petty, Nick Flores and Heisman Trophy-winner Robert Griffin III are among the quarterbacks he’s developed through the years. Not to mention Miami transfer D’Eriq King. He will protect Franks by running the football.

During those prime years at Baylor, Lache Seastrunk, Shock Linwood and Terrance Ganaway all had big seasons running the football under Briles. While the offensive coordinator at Florida Atlantic, Devin Singletary ran for nearly 2,000 yards.

Briles’ scheme should keep defenses honest by running the ball, using some play action, and zone-read concepts which will allow Franks to accentuate his strengths and hide his weaknesses.
