3. Houston Cougars (4-8 in 2019)

It was a surprisingly disappointing season for the Houston Cougars and first-year head coach Dana Holgorsen last season. It was especially disappointing for D’Eriq King, who was coming off a meniscus tear in the previous season.

King only played in four games in the previous when he decided to redshirt for the season. During the time, the Cougars were 1-3 as they were only able to finish with three more wins without King in a brutal schedule that featured five ranked opponents.

With King going to Miami, Jarren Williams could make the transfer to Houston where they will very likely be a competition with junior quarterback Clayton Tune. This move would be basically an exchange of quarterbacks for the upcoming season. One of the most significant times this has happened before was when former Texas A&M Aggie Kyler Murray transferred to Oklahoma in December 2015 and former Oklahoma Sooner Trevor Knight transferred to Texas A&M in January 2016.

Williams could benefit in a multiple offensive scheme, coached by Holgorsen, where he plays as an RPO-style quarterback in a spread formation. Holgorsen has had success with dual-threat quarterbacks that could throw the ball multiple times in a game.

Last season, the Cougars were ranked 51st in points per game (30.7) but 91st in the passing yards per game (203.3) in an offense led by Tune. The Cougars’ offense could benefit from a more productive passer in Williams that has experience playing for Miami last season.
