6. Jim McElwain, HC at Central Michigan

Jim McElwain got his coaching career back on track after a rough 3-4 start in his final season at Florida in 2017. In his first year at Central Michigan this past season, he turned a 1-11 team in 2018 and to this past season winning the MAC West division with an 8-6 record.

In between his head coaching stint at Florida and Central Michigan, he was the wide receiver coach with the Michigan Wolverines in 2018. McElwain was an assistant head coach, wide receiver coach, and special teams coordinator for the Spartans for three seasons from 2003-05. He knows the state of Michigan very well with his coaching experiences in the state with three different schools.

Having a former assistant for the Spartans, an experienced coach, and an excellent recruiting makes McElwain a viable head coaching candidate for a Power Five program such as Michigan State. Most likely, he would choose to be with the same coaching staff that is there now with the Spartans.

McElwain being a former Nick Saban assistant would be replacing another Saban assistant in Mark Dantonio if hired.
