NFL Draft 2020: Ranking the 3 biggest reaches from the first round
Let’s get one thing straight here: Andrew Thomas is a first-round talent. OK, now that that’s out of the way, let’s get another thing squared away: he’s not a top-five talent.
Listen, I know the Giants fell in love with Thomas and he was their guy even though they had the fourth overall pick, but someone has to be willing to trade up to that spot, even if it means the Giants don’t get much out of it — maybe a late-round pick. Thomas was probably the third-best offensive tackle in the draft and the Giants landed him at No. 4 overall.
It may be unfair to judge this pick so harshly because there was talk that the Giants couldn’t find a trade partner to move down with, but something could have been done here.
Many draft experts saw Thomas as the third-best prospect at the position behind Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs and Alabama’s Jedrick Wills Jr. Grabbing him above both of those guys and behind just Joe Burrow, Chase Young and Jeff Okudah is insane.
Thomas may end up being a Pro Bowler but he’s going to be a work in progress and the Giants could have gotten a much better value pick here instead of reaching by about 10 draft spots.
