NFL Draft 2020: Ranking the 5 biggest reaches
I anticipated leading up to the draft that I would be writing about Jordan Love being a reach, but I thought for different circumstances. I thought that he would actually be drafted much higher than this because quarterback is the most important position in football and teams continuously overdraft them — for example, Blaine Gabbert in 2011 or EJ Manuel in 2013.
I thought Love was overrated heading into the draft and was more of a second or third-round talent.
This classifies as a reach more because of who selected Love. The Green Bay Packers are fresh off an NFC Championship appearance in coach Matt Lafleur’s first season and it was apparent to nearly everyone that Aaron Rodgers was in need of more weapons aside from Devante Adams to go further in the playoffs.
The Packers elected to move up from 30 to 26 to draft Love to be Rodgers’ successor, whenever that time might be. The problem with that is that Rodgers has shown no signs of wanting to retire, his contract is virtually not tradable and with how close the Packers were last season, why not give Rodgers his best shot to win now with more receivers and tight ends?
We won’t know how this one went for a long time because I don’t expect Love to see any meaningful playing time, barring a serious injury to Rodgers. Packers fans might be wondering why they did not elect to take a receiver if the issue persists throughout the season.
