NFL Draft 2020: Top 3 candidates for Offensive Rookie of the Year
The Indianapolis Colts traded away their 13th overall pick for San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl defensive DeForest Buckner. They did, however, have two second-round picks that included the 41st overall pick where they were able to select a star running back in Jonathan Taylor.
The Colts needed a reliable starting running back especially with Marlon Mack becoming a free agent after this upcoming season.
The Colts were ranked seventh in the league in rushing yards per game (133.1) but with a running back in Mack that averaged 4.4 yards per attempt. The Colts will need a running back that can break through the line of scrimmage and explode for huge runs.
Indianapolis selected one of the NCAA’s most premier runners in college football history. Throughout his three-year career, Taylor rushed for 6,174 yards and 50 touchdowns on 926 carries. He finished sixth overall in NCAA history in career rushing yards. He is a player who can handle a majority of the carries on the offense.
This attribute will be huge for a Colts’ offense that will rely on 38-year old quarterback Phillip Rivers, who signed a one-year contract in the offseason. Rivers will be the leader of the Colts’ offense as they will rely on his consistent passing ability.
It will be Taylor that will be the heavy contributor of the Colts’ offense that could catapult them to one of the top offenses in the league.
