LB. Wisconsin. 15. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Zack Baun. 4. player

Zack Baun was the only player rated in the top 20 that was not chosen in the first three rounds. It’s hard to think that in three rounds there was not a team that could have used the services of a player the caliber of Baun.

Baun could be considered by most a tweener. He played outside linebacker at Wisconsin at 6-foot-2 — hardly the ideal height of a 3-4 outside linebacker. He’s hardly the first elite prospect without ideal measurables.

Dwight Freeney found a way to play 16 years at defensive end and outside linebacker at 6-1. John Randle hardly had the dimensions of a “traditional” interior defensive lineman, yet he hewed for himself a 14-year career. Baun is that kind of player.

He might not have traditional dimensions, but he has a knack for making plays. Baun has a nose for the ball and quarterbacks. He also has a frame that can carry more weight. The former Wisconsin standout is a gamer.

The former Badger has a motor that does not stop. When you have a prospect like Baun in the draft you have to decide whether you think he’s limited, or you think he has a host of untapped potential. Baun might not be plug and play, but his best football is ahead of him.
