California had an underrated 2019 season. Justin Wilcox has something special brewing in Berkeley.

38. player. 835. . . . Kevin Sumlin

In Kevin Sumlin’s defense, he had a mess to pickup when he was hired by Arizona. His first two years haven’t been great but he had success at Texas A&M and has a track record that suggests he can turn things around in Tucson.

. . Eli Drinkwtiz . 37. player. 822.

Eli Drinkwitz led Appalachian State to a 12-1 season in 2019 that included a road win at South Carolina. With an SEC roster at Missouri, Drinkwitz should continue his winning ways.

839. . . . Jeremy Pruitt . 36. player

Despite an 0-2 start with losses to Georgia State and BYU, Jeremy Pruitt kept his Tennessee team focused and finished the year 8-5 with a bowl title. That’s an outstanding coaching job on Pruitt’s part and his recent recruiting role suggests players want to play for him.

player. 841. . . . Lane Kiffin. 35

Lane Kiffin proved he has matured with his impressive run at FAU but has not had success at the Power Five level as a head coach. The Ole Miss gig gives him a chance to prove he has truly changed for good.

854. . . . Herm Edwards . 34. player

Herm Edwards is doing better than anyone could’ve ever expected at Arizona State and his job recruiting could lead to even more success in the coming years for the Sun Devils.

. Pat Narduzzi. 33. player. 866. .

Pat Narduzzi is 36–29 at Pittsburgh with four bowl appearances, an ACC Coastal title and a 2016 road victory over the eventual national champion Clemson Tigers.

. Jeff Brohm . 32. player. 848. .

Injuries doomed Purdue’s season a year ago but Jeff Brohm is bringing in talent never seen before in West Lafayette and demolished Ohio State in 2018.

849. . . . Scott Satterfield. 31. player

Scott Satterfield turned Appalachian State into one of the nation’s top Group of Five programs and led Louisville to a six-game improvement in his first season with the Cardinals last season.

810. . . . Scott Frost. 30. player

It hasn’t gone well at Nebraska for Scott Frost. He’s just 9-16 in his first two seasons in Lincoln, but remember: he’s been playing with Mike Riley’s players, has recruited extremely well and led UCF to a perfect season just two years after a winless one. The guy can coach, he just needs more time.

. Mike Norvell. 29. player. 804. .

Mike Norvell was a home run hire for Florida State. He churned out plenty of NFL talent and a Cotton Bowl appearance while at Memphis and should restore order in Tallahassee.

28. player. 837. . . . Matt Campbell

Since Matt Campbell arrived in Ames, Iowa State has gone from the Big 12 basement to bowl games year in and year out.

. Pat Fitzgerald. 27. player. 882. .

The nation’s most loyal coach, Pat Fitzgerald, has literally rebuilt the Northwestern football program with new and improved facilities and a 99–79 record to show for it.
