Sam Howell is everyone’s Heisman Trophy dark-horse this season, and for good reason. He’s coming off of an impressive freshman year in Chapel Hill, winning ACC Freshman of the Year honors. The North Carolina-native accomplished this by throwing for over 3,600 yards and 38 touchdowns.

One of the reasons Howell is poised to have a breakout season is everyone is back at the skill positions for him. Last year’s leading rusher Michael Carter returns and two of Howell’s three leading receivers — Dazz Newsome and Beau Corrales — return this season as well.

The Tar Heels also signed seven more wide receivers including four-star Georgia-native Josh Downs if Howell needed more targets to throw the ball. With everything they have coming back this season, Howell can have a big year if he can cut down on some of his mistakes.

Howell plays with an edge you want your quarterback to play with. His play is reminiscent of Baker Mayfield. He’s confident and knows the Tar Heels have to defeat the Clemson Tigers to win the ACC and he wants the challenge. Even if they aren’t good enough to beat Clemson, the Tar Heels are front-runners in the ACC Coastal.
