Alabama Football: 3 breakout candidates for 2020
By Dante Pryor
How does a player that had 1,528 yards from scrimmage and 20 total touchdowns last season qualify for a break out season? When that player has the potential to have an even bigger season, that’s how. Najee Harris is in line for a monster season.
If the last two games of the 2019 season — 51 carries, 282 yards — are any indication of how he will be used this season, expect Harris to get a lot more touches this season. That is not to say the Crimson Tide are returning to the Derek Henry era, but — given their quarterback situation — expect Harris to be a more integral part of the offense.
Whether incumbent veteran Mac Jones or five-star phenom Bryce Young starts at quarterback, Harris will see more carries. They’ll lean on Harris with Jones because they might not trust Jones can carry the offense like Tua.
They’ll lean on Harris with Young because they might not trust Young can carry the offense like Tua — yet. The receiver room is different with Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III now in the NFL. It is talented but loses some of that home run hitting ability.
This is where Harris comes into play. The senior running back is not only a punishing runner, but he is also elusive.
