College Football: 3 teams that would benefit from canceled 2020 season
1. Rutgers Scarlet Knights
If you’re familiar with my past articles, you’re probably a little bit tired of hearing about Rutgers, but I’m willing to die on this hill. And after being flamed on Reddit recently, I urge everybody to read the meat of the article, not just the list. I promise you that this makes sense.
Rutgers is obviously a terrible program. You’d be hard pressed to find a team that’s had a worse stretch in recent memory. But with the hiring of Greg Schiano, Rutgers might have something going here. And the crucial part of this, in my opinion, is a strong start.
With the roster he’s got and the way teams look down on Rutgers, he will not have it easy in his first season. If he came out of the gate with a one or two-win season, that would be bad for morale, recruiting and image.
This year could be used as a gap year for this football program. Some of Schiano’s early recruits would be able to come in and make a strong impact with better knowledge of the system. He would have the opportunity to settle in with his old team and get his staff organized. If the season is canceled, we’ll likely see a strong bounce-back year from the Scarlet Knights in 2021.
