College Football Rankings 2020: Projected AP Top 25 for Week 9
By Zach Bigalke
Marshall stayed undefeated in Week 8, taking down Florida Atlantic 20-9 at home in Huntington. After entering the week at No. 22 in the AP Top 25, the Thundering improved to 5-0 and reached 3-0 in Conference USA play. Look for Doc Holliday’s team to move up closer to the top 20 in the poll this week after staying among the dwindling number of unbeaten teams around the country.
Grant Wells was hardly perfect at quarterback, throwing two interceptions and finishing with an 18-of-31 performance. But Wells also threw two touchdown passes and finished with 251 yards through the air, helping reverse a 9-7 deficit in the third quarter by leading three unanswered scoring drives. Brenden Knox piled up 101 rushing yards on 25 carries and added two receptions for 55 yards and a score.
As the last unbeaten team among C-USA teams who have started play this season, Marshall is the league’s only hope of landing the automatic Group of Five bid into a New Year’s Six bowl. The Thundering Herd will look to stay perfect in the standings and maintain their Top 25 status in Week 9 in a Friday-night duel against FIU.
