College Football Rankings 2020: Projected AP Top 25 for Week 10
By Zach Bigalke
Marshall’s Friday-night game against Florida International was postponed in Week 9 due to a spate of COVID-19 cases on the Panthers roster. That gave the Thundering Herd an unexpected idle week right after they jumped into the top 20 of the AP Top 25 ahead of the week. With three games already postponed this season, it is unlikely that Marshall will get to reschedule all of them.
More important than even just the rankings, how will the loss of a game or multiple games impact the Herd in the discussion for the top Group of Five team? Marshall would likely need every other Group of Five champion to finish with multiple losses and an undefeated conference championship of their own to even have a chance in the discussion.
That said, they still have a chance to finish a season ranked for the first time since 2014 if they can play out the rest of their slate and reschedule at least their C-USA games against Rice and FIU. The Thundering Herd are setting themselves up to remain in the discussion — even without a road game against East Carolina out of conference — if they keep winning, starting in Week 10 against Massachusetts.
