BYU took a well-deserved rest after crushing Boise State on the road in Week 10, and they will remain comfortably in the top 10 of the AP Top 25 despite the idle weekend. As an independent they face an uphill battle to secure an at-large berth in the New Year’s Six or in the College Football Playoff itself, but Kalani Sitake’s team continues making its case week after week on the field. In a year where BYU had to scramble to assemble their schedule, the Cougars are making people take notice.

The Cougars rank in the top 10 nationally in both scoring offense and scoring defense, winning their first eight contests by an average of more than 31 points per game. They are playing like one of the best teams in the country in terms of Resume SP+, which would consider them a top-five team even with a weak schedule. Zach Wilson has assembled a Heisman case for himself along the way as he ranks sixth in passing efficiency, first in passing touchdowns, and second in yards through the air.

Only two games remain on BYU’s schedule. The Cougars take the field in Week 12 for a home game against FCS North Alabama, which will head to Provo 0-3 after losses to Liberty, Jacksonville State, and Southern Miss. The season ends on December 12 with a road game at San Diego State. By then, BYU might have slipped out of mind unless the teams around them start falling out of the running.
