Iowa State moved one step closer to securing a spot in the Big 12 title game, pitching a 45-0 shutout against Kansas State at home on Saturday afternoon to improve to 6-2 overall. More importantly, the Cyclones stayed atop the Big 12 standings with a 6-1 record in league play. That will keep them locked into a spot somewhere around the mid-to-high teens of the College Football Playoff rankings when the selection committee releases their first Top 25 on Tuesday.

Brock Purdy threw for three touchdowns and 236 yards on 16-of-20 passing. Breece Hall racked up 135 rushing yards and two scores while averaging nine yards per carry to balance things out on offense. The Cyclones defense stood firm against the Wildcats, exerting their will on a Kansas State offense that managed to generate only 76 passing yards and 73 rushing yards over the course of the game.

A win against Texas in a Week 13 Black Friday showdown in Austin would lock Iowa State into the Big 12 championship game — no matter what happens in their regular-season finale at home against West Virginia on December 5, thanks to their head-to-head tiebreaker against Oklahoma. While a College Football Playoff berth is out of reach for the Cyclones, a New Year’s Six berth is still well within reach.
