Appalachian State had the upper hand in the first half of their road game against Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers turned things around after halftime to remain undefeated and effectively lock up their spot in the Sun Belt championship game. The 34-23 victory over the Mountaineers will put Coastal Carolina somewhere in the mid-to-high teens when the College Football Playoff selection committee releases its first set of rankings on November 24.

Coastal Carolina was outgained by the visitors, as the Chanticleers defense gave up 211 passing yards to Zac Thomas and 178 rushing yards to Camerun Peoples. But the defense also nabbed three interceptions from Thomas that turned into the last 14 points in the comeback win, including a 38-yard pick-six by D’Jordan Strong that iced the victory. Grayson McCall threw for 200 yards and ran for 69 yards with three total touchdowns.

Two road games remain in Sun Belt play, and Coastal Carolina would have to lose both to allow Appalachian State to steal away the division crown. The Chanticleers head to Texas State on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and play at Troy on the second Saturday of December. In between, they also square off in what could be a battle of unbeatens at home against independent Liberty.
