Oklahoma Football: 3 Takeaways from Big 12 title win over Iowa State
By Andrew Tineo
Offense has to get better in the second half
The Sooners have been spoiled with excellent quarterback from transfers since 2015. Seeing 2-3 more years of that QB play is to be expected, after a dazzling performance from Rattler. His comparisons to Baker Mayfield are valid, as both have great arms, and have a fantastic trait of improvising outside of the pocket.
Even with that being said, Rattler’s consistency has been called into question. It’s a fair assessment to make and Rattler has a lot of time to grow. However, it was almost Deja vu for the Sooners with four minutes left in the game. Oklahoma had been poor in the second half on offense and was similar to their prior two losses on the season.
Not many teams are able to win, while going 1-11 on third down. The Sooners did not win time of possession and had more penalties than Iowa State. Oklahoma got penalized eight times for 59 yards. The Sooners also rushed for just 3.9 yards per carry and had less yards than the Cyclones.
It’s encouraging that Oklahoma football can still find ways to win, even without playing their best. However, many NY6 candidate teams will make you pay more efficiently than Iowa State attempted to.
Oklahoma have punched their ticket to a NY6 bowl and will be playing in the Cotton Bowl. For Iowa State, they will be awaiting their bowl invitation.
