College Football: Ranking 5 biggest upsets of the 2020 season
1. Kansas State 38 at Oklahoma (-27.5) 35
This game not only remains a head-scratcher now but easily could be the game that kept the Sooners out of the College Football Playoff this season considering that their only other loss came to Iowa State who they would beat in the rematch in the Big 12 title game.
Oklahoma always carries the weight of expectations going into every year and despite having almost every notable player leave after last season, Spencer Rattler and company were expected to hit the ground running, especially after beating Missouri State 48-0 in their opening game. The Sooners were the No. 3 team in the nation.
Meanwhile, Kansas State was 0-1 after an upset at home versus Arkansas State who had not beaten a Power 5 opponent in a dozen years. More worrying was that K-State had struggled to run the ball which is normally their strength.
Oklahoma had this game won. They limited Kansas State to only 56 yards rushing and outgained the Wildcats 517-390. K-State had over 100 yards of penalties.
So what went wrong?
Oklahoma controlled the game for almost three quarters, but after going up 35-14, Kansas State mounted an incredible comeback.
To put it into perspective, here are the results of the next several possessions for both sides:
Kansas State: Skylar Thompson run for a touchdown. (21-35)
Oklahoma: Fumble.
Kansas State: Skylar Thompson run for a touchdown. (28-35)
Oklahoma: Blocked punt.
Kansas State: Deuce Vaughn run for a touchdown. (35-35)
Oklahoma: Spencer Rattler sacked for a loss on third down. Punt.
Kansas State: Blake Lynch 50-yard field goal. (38-35)
The Sooner defense fell apart as K-State outscored Oklahoma 17-0 in the fourth quarter.
Rattler got the ball back with one final chance, but the Wildcats sealed the game with an interception.
Kansas State had just pulled off the biggest upset of the 2020 college football season.
