Linebacker

Starting middle linebacker: Corey Flagg Jr.
Backup: Avery Huff

Starting WLB: Bradley Jennings Jr.
Backup: Sam Brooks

Striker: Gilbert Frierson
Backup: Keontra Smith

This was Miami’s worst position on defense in 2020 and 2021 will depend on the development of younger players. Moving Zach McCloud to defensive end was necessary because of how he struggled playing in space at linebacker, but finding guys to step up might be difficult.

Bradley Jennings is not a starting caliber linebacker for a program like Miami, but it has not developed this position well and they may opt to go with the less talented, but experienced linebacker in Jennings.

Gilbert Frierson had a breakout season at the striker position last year and should be one of the best players on defense next season. Sam Brooks has shown flashes of being able to play linebacker, but the former defensive end can’t find consistency and that is why he has not cracked the starting lineup enough.

A name to watch at linebacker will be Tirek Austin-Cave, who redshirted last season. He could be what the Hurricanes need and a strong spring could help him crack the rotation.
