2021 Senior Bowl: 3 takeaways from annual draft showcase
QB group struggles
It was a rough day for nearly every quarterback who took the field in Mobile. Some of it had to do with both offensive lines not buying enough time.
Kellen Mond had a rough first half, but did a nice job keeping himself in the game and leading the American team to two touchdown drives in the second half.
Mond was named MVP of this game and his ability to battle through adversity may have been the factor that gave him the crown. The film on him has a lot to be dissected, but he did show a good deal of mental toughness to bounce back.
Jamie Newman seemed to get sacked or pressured on every drop back in his limited action. Sam Ehlinger did lead his offense on a touchdown drive, but completed less than 50 percent of his passes.
Ian Book was solid on his feet, and able to fight off pressure to make some nice throws. His lone interception came on a Hail Mary attempt at the end of the third quarter. Book wasn’t bad by any stretch, there just wasn’t much to get excited about.
In a bit of surprise, Feleipe Franks may have been the most fun QB to watch today. Franks was able to show off his arm strength, completing three passes of 20+ yards. He did miss an easy deep throw in the 4th quarter, but overall it was an impressive performance from the Florida transfer.
All of these QB’s are expected to go in the mid to late rounds of this year’s draft. Unfortunately, we could not see the big names like Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, and Zach Wilson. But we did get a good look at some QB’s who are in the mix in the later rounds of the draft.
