18. Ranking every Heisman Trophy Winner: Kyler Murray, Oklahoma Sooners football

The Oklahoma Sooners have had seven players win a Heisman Trophy in the history of their storied program, with the seventh coming in 2018. That Heisman Trophy was won by Kyler Murray, a guy who stepped in for a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback in Baker Mayfield and won one of his own by putting together one of the more dominant seasons of any quarterback in college football history.

Murray’s story is an interesting one, as he very well could have been a Major League Baseball player, as the Oakland Athletics picked him with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. Despite that and the ability to sign on the dotted line and be an instant millionaire, Murray decided he wanted to stick with football, and fans of the Sooners have to be happy he did.

All he did during his 2018 campaign was light the college football world on fire, racking up nearly 5,000 yards of total offense and leading the Sooners to a spot in the College Football Playoff. He accounted for 51 touchdowns during the season, 11 of which came on the ground, as he showed he made the right decision to return to the Sooners to be their quarterback.

Murray was able to beat Tua Tagovailoa and Dwayne Haskins to take home the Heisman Trophy, and while the Sooners did not win a national title, he did enough to become the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Since then, Murray has gone on to win an NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award and is currently one of the more exciting young quarterbacks in the league.
