Unlikely Power 5 conference championship matchups for 2021
By Austin Lloyd
Big 12: Iowa State v. Kansas State
Who would have ever thought that two of the worst football programs (historically) to ever grace the Big 12 Conference would one day have the potential to battle one another for the league crown?
In recent memory, ISU and KSU have both proven their ability to stun the Oklahoma Sooners, and that would be the biggest obstacle for any Big 12 hopeful. With OU hypothetically out of the way, only Texas and Oklahoma State would stand in their paths, and that pair is certainly beatable.
The Cyclones, led by head coach Matt Campbell and running back Breece Hall, have even had pundits giving them playoff hype for next season. That, combined with some Wildcat upsets, could make this dream very much a reality.
Big Ten: Iowa v. Indiana
Now this one would be entertaining. Football has never really been the Hoosiers forte, but one would not know it from last year.
Indiana went 6-2 in 2020, 6-1 in conference play. Their sole Big Ten loss? A 7-point defeat at Ohio State, the National Championship Game runner-up. If they can play as good as they did last season, and perhaps manage to complete a comeback against OSU in the process, the East division could be as good as theirs.
Looking over to the Hawkeyes, there is less explaining to do. Iowa has been a formidable foe in the Big Ten for years now, and beating Northwestern is plausible at worst. Besides them, Wisconsin can be tricky. Besides them? No one.
