ACC, Pac-12 fall flat

There’s a narrative that the ACC and the Pac-12 are weaker than the rest of the Power-5 and neither league did anything to dispel that notion in Week 1 of the college football season.

Miami got run over by Alabama, which is nothing to be ashamed about, but more damage was inflicted when North Carolina, one of the preseason favorites, fell on the road to Va. Tech.

I suppose it could help long-term if Virginia Tech could get back to being Virginia Tech. Yet, it’s hard to say that’s the case following one upset win.

Clemson scoring three points against Georgia also didn’t help and the league’s only national title hope right now is the Tigers, who might need some help even if it wins out and wins the ACC.

For the Pac-12, Week 1 was a disaster. Stanford got pummeled by Kansas State in a game that should have been pretty even and we all know about Washington losing to Montana.

USC and Oregon, two other favorites, struggled a little more than expected and while that’s just the first week of college football sometimes, the Pac-12 could really use a win by Oregon this week at Ohio State.

Obviously, a bounceback by UW at Michigan would help too but if any league needs to prove it can win games outside of conference play, it’s the Pac-12.
