ACC Football: Week 1 Power Rankings after Clemson, UNC lose
By Dante Pryor
6. Pitt Panthers, 1-0: Pitt dominated arguably the worst program in D-1 with a 51-7 slaughtering of the Massachusetts Minutemen. This game was never in doubt, with UMass lucky to get on the board in the fourth quarter.
Pitt used ten different running backs to combine for 223 yards, and Kenny Pickett was Kenny Pickett, throwing for 272 yards and two touchdowns. The defense overwhelmed the inferior UMass offense, allowing just 209 yards, including a meager 42 rushing yards.
5. North Carolina Tar Heels, 0-1: Losing five players to the NFL would not be easy for North Carolina this season, but the Tar Heel laid an egg in Blacksburg Saturday afternoon. The defense played well despite going down 14-0 early.
It was the offense that had its share of woes against the Hokies. Sam Howell never got comfortable in the pocket, and the wide receiver, save Josh Downs, had trouble getting open all game. The offensive line looked out of since against the Virginia Tech pass rush as well.
Tar Heel head coach Mack Brown and his offensive staff need to work and fix some of the many glaring issues with the Tar Heels offense. Running back, Ty Chandler had 66 yards on the ground but only had 10 carries.
If the ‘Heels can’t take some pressure off of Howell, this season could fall short of expectations.
