Nobody doubts that Dino Babers is a good football coach, but there are some coaches who were built to be coordinators or position coaches, and that’s where they’re strongest. Not all assistants can succeed at the head coaching level.

Even before Syracuse, Babers’ limited success at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green should have been a clue that things might go awry, and awry things have gone.

You have to applaud Syracuse for giving Babers the chance, but with only one winning season since taking over in 2016 (and winning seasons are really the only benchmark for a coach in that program) you’d think it was clear that moving on before 2021 would have been best.

Syracuse isn’t the most attractive job in the nation, so landing a big-name coach probably isn’t going to happen, but there were some quality coaches available this offseason Syracuse could have pressed the reset button with.

Prediction: Syracuse isn’t a quick-hook school, so unless the Orange don’t win any more games between now and Thanksgiving, he’ll probably last the year.
