New Year’s Six Watch: BYU 2-0 against the Pac-12 this season
By Dante Pryor
1. BYU Cougars 2-0
The Cougars came into this season with a lot of questions following an 11-win season. First, BYU football had to replace quarterback Zach Wilson and offensive tackle Brady Christensen. Questions were surrounding the schedule the Cougars played.
Through no fault of their own, COVID reconfigured the Cougars’ schedule because of COVID-19. Jaren Hall, the first black quarterback to start for the Cougars in program history, has stepped in and played well early in the season.
Hall is an excellent passer and is a plus athlete in the running game. The redshirt sophomore is second to Tyler Allgeier in rushing yards for the Cougars. Neil Pau’u is Hall’s favorite target, leading the team receptions.
So far, BYU football is 2-0 against the Pac-12 with wins against Arizona and interstate rival Utah in the Holy War. The Cougars have the opportunity to go three for three early in the season when Arizona State travels to Provo and takes on the Cougars.
If BYU runs through the Pac-12 (they also have Washington State and USC on their schedule), they are in the New Year’s Six easy. Though it is often cliche, could the Cougars have a Playoff argument if they run the table against their Pac-12 opponents?
