Big 12 Football power rankings: TCU pushing Oklahoma for top spot
Record in last 5 games: 4-1
Total offense conference rank: 8
Total defense conference rank: 8
With how the last two games have come down to the wire, some may question Oklahoma State being this high. Both games have been far too close for comfort, but this Oklahoma State team has displayed toughness in how they have finished.
Defensively is where the Cowboys have shined thus far. Oklahoma State has allowed just three touchdowns to open up the year. Their defense has been led by linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez who currently leads the FBS in tackles.
They will take a big jump in competition with a road game against Boise State looming. Oklahoma State will need to come out of the gates with a lot more energy to hold down Hank Bachmeier and the Broncos’ offense.
Next Game: at Boise State
Record in last 5 games: 3-2
Total offense conference rank: 9
Total defense conference rank: 1
This is now two weak offensive performances in a row for the Cyclones. The defense played outstanding against Iowa, but were constantly playing on short fields. Only one of Iowa’s four scoring possessions had to go for more than 50 yards.
Brock Purdy has yet to throw a touchdown pass, while Breece Hall does not have an 100 yard rushing game yet. Hall has been productive as a pass catcher, but this offense as a whole has displayed a lack of explosiveness.
On the other end, Iowa State’s defense leads the conference in total yards allowed and have produced six sacks. Will McDonald has accounted for 2.5 of those after a 2020 season where he led the nation in sacks.
Iowa State’s championship aspirations have taken a major hit with how they have played thus far. They will need to recapture the energy of last year to finish strong if they want to be considered for a New Year’s Six bowl.
