Time for moral victories is over

Surely, Nebraska fans would feel much worse if the Huskers had gotten blown out on Saturday by the Sooners. That didn’t happen and all the people who joked about how badly NU was going to get beaten were proven wrong.

Nebraska can compete with the best of them. Frost and company have proven that again. Martinez is a legitimately talented quarterback — one that’s good enough to lead this team to eight wins or so.

But does anyone believe the Huskers will get more than six?

If so, it’s going to have to beat someone with a pulse, sorry Rutgers and Purdue.

The best win for Frost remains a victory over a mediocre Michigan State team back in 2017. Outside of that, it’s been a bunch of moral victories.

Frost would be the first to say it, but Nebraska football is too good for moral victories. At least it should be.

I’ll agree this can be a step in the right direction if this performance leads to more wins down the road but it feels just like a missed opportunity.

It would be easier to feel good about this team had it won at Illinois, which it should have and was 3-1 with a close loss to OU. Instead, it’s 2-2 and needs at least four wins to reach a bowl game, which given the past few years, is far from a given.

That’s a goal and if Frost is to remain as the head coach, it’s the least he’s got to do. Today might be a step in the right direction, sure, or it’s another sign of something that’s never going to change.
