Memphis upsets Mississippi State 31-29
The Memphis Tigers faced their strongest opponent of the regular season when Mississippi State came to town in Week 3. It was Memphis’ first game against a team from a Power 5 conference since the 2019 Cotton Bowl when they faced Penn State.
Memphis senior wide receiver Calvin Austin III accounted for three touchdowns against their SEC neighbors, including a controversial punt return that quickly went viral.
Despite possessing the ball for only 19 of the game’s 60 minutes, Memphis made their biggest moves on defense and special teams. The Tiger’s defense picked up a fumble and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown early in the first quarter. The Tigers also had a massive score on the aforementioned controversial punt return and the team’s kicker put the Tigers up by 8 points late in the game.
A huge game from Mississippi State’s Will Rogers was not enough to overcome the Tigers’ multifaceted attack. Rogers threw the ball 67 times, completing 50 of them for 419 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Memphis moves to 3-0 on the season as they face Texas-San Antonio next week. Mississippi State begins its SEC slate with a matchup against LSU in Week 4.
