2. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (3-0, 1-0)

Because of overall record, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons are technically first in the ACC Atlantic division standings. There is a long way to go this season but game recognizes game and the Deacons are in first place.

Sam Hartman and the Wake Forest offense are cooking. They were never threatened and everything they did worked against Florida State in their 35-14 victory against the Seminoles. The defense had six turnovers en route to the win.

The Deacons get a tough game against Virginia in Charlottesville next week to see if they can keep the momentum going. The negative to their schedule? Wake does not see Clemson until November.

1. Clemson Tigers (2-1, 1-0)

We here at headquarters fully recognize the argument for Wake Forest to be first on this list. For better or worse, Clemson would likely be favored on a neutral field and did beat a better opponent this week (or at least one that wanted to play).

That does not overshadow Clemson’s many problems. What has been most surprising early in the season is their inability to lean on the running game. The Tigers have their most talented offensive line (based on the recruiting rankings) and three good running backs.

The passing game is plagued by sameness. This roster is without an effective tight end or a true slot receiver. Where Clemson has an advantage over everyone in the ACC is their stingy defense. Brent Venables and the defense will keep Clemson in games until the offense gets it together.
