8. Virginia Tech Hokies (3-1, 1-0)

Virginia Tech’s 21-10 win against the Richmond Spiders could be a case of not wanting to put a lot on tape before their game against Notre Dame. On the other hand, it could be that the offense is not dominant.

It could very well be a case of two things being true. It seems like head coach Justin Fuente and the Hokies are satisfied with mucking up and winning ugly. Virginia Tech’s next four games are not going to be easy. Let’s see if they can muck those up too.

7. Pittsburgh Panthers (3-1)

The Panthers have scored over 40 points in every game, including 77 points against New Hampshire. It is FCS New Hampshire, but 77 points are 77 points. In this same season, the Panthers lost to Western Michigan.

That, in a nutshell, sums up who the Panthers are. One of the primary reasons the Panthers lost the game against Western Michigan was their inability to run the football. So far, they are running the ball better than last season, but the defense needs to be better.

6. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (2-2, 1-1)

The Yellow Jackets are playing the best football under Geoff Collins. Though they lost to Northern Illinois to start the season, their game against Clemson and their thrashing of North Carolina show that what Collins and his staff are trying to do is working.

The Jackets are solid defensively, and whether it is Jeff Sims or Jordan Yates, the quarterback position looks solid. It also helps to have one of the best running backs in the conference with Jahymr Gibbs.
