2. Iowa Hawkeyes (4-0, 1-0)

When conversations about the best defenses in the country come about, the Iowa Hawkeyes need to be in that conversation. You do not go down the list very far before you get to Iowa. There is an argument the Hawkeyes have the best defense on this side of the SEC.

The offense is a different story. Iowa’s lackluster offense makes their game against Maryland so intriguing. The Terrapins are playing well offensively, and Iowa might need to put some points on the board to win. Can they?

1. Michigan State Spartans (4-0, 2-0)

Someone will question why the fifth-ranked team in the nation is ranked 2nd in these power rankings. Well, Michigan State’s wins against Miami and Nebraska look to be better than any win Iowa has so far this season.

Iowa State and Indiana were both overrated coming into this season. Not only that, the Spartans are playing well on both sides of the ball, not just one. Right now, the Spartans are playing the best football in the Big Ten.

Their close win was partly due to Nebraska playing better football and a hangover from their big win against Miami the previous week. However, the Spartans are playing better ball than anyone in the conference right now.

However, the worst part of their schedule is the Spartans get Penn State and Ohio State back-to-back at the end of the season.
