2. Michael Mayer becomes favorite for Mackey Award

Michael Mayer has been one of the most proactive tight ends in college football this season and it feels like he’s just getting started.

Through four games, he has accounted for 267 yards and three touchdowns on 24 receptions, standing out as one of Jack Coan’s favorite targets. He’s going to have over 300 receiving yards and five touchdowns in October, taking the lead in the race for the Mackey Award which isn’t going to be easy to win.

Notre Dame constantly churns out elite tight ends but Mayer might honestly be the most naturally gifted of the bunch and Brian Kelly knows that. He needs to make sure he gets his sophomore tight end involved early and often and I think he’ll head into the month of November with 50-plus catches for 600-plus yards and eight touchdowns.

Mayer is going to lead the Mackey Award conversation after a monster month.
