College Football Top 25: Recapping Week 6, previewing Week 7
By Mitch Kaiser
18. Arizona State (5-1)
The Sun Devils stayed undefeated in the Pac-12 and are proving that they may have the best defense in the conference. They were ferocious in this one shutting down Stanford who just came off a huge win against Oregon. The Sun Devils got to Tanner McKee more than anyone has this season, sacking the quarterback five times and picking him off three times.
Cornerback Jack Jones and edge defender Tyler Johnson were all over the field in this one both posting PFF grades above 77.0. They affected the game in a number of ways forcing turnovers and getting pressure off the edge as they have been all season.
If Arizona State can maintain its top-tier defensive status, it’ll be competitive in just about every game and will have an excellent chance to win the Pac-12.
Next game: vs. Utah
My prediction: Win 20-17
19. BYU (5-1)
The Cougars were handed their first loss against Boise State on Saturday. This was a game I suspected BYU might lose as I thought they were pretty overrated in the first place. A lot of their flaws finally came out and were on display in this one turning the ball over four times and not being able to capitalize on several of their drives.
Quarterback Jaren Hall returned from injury playing his first game in three weeks. He looked very up and down and was inconsistent throughout the whole game. It sure seems like backup quarterback Baylor Romney played way better in Hall’s absence and I think they should go back to starting him in my opinion.
The Cougars’ offense was flowing much better with Romney under center. Kalani Sitake will have to make a quick decision moving forward on who to start at quarterback as they have another challenging matchup coming up at Baylor.
Next game: vs. Baylor
My prediction: Lose 28-23
20. Florida (4-2)
The Gators got their easy conference tune-up game this week against Vanderbilt. They, too, held Vandy scoreless just like every other SEC team has this season. Florida’s defense hasn’t been the issue this season though. It’s been the inability to find consistency on offense.
Starting running back Malik Davis was out with an injury so the running game wasn’t as efficient for the Gators which has been their bread and butter. Luckily, they didn’t really need it this week as they were playing an inferior opponent and won by 42 points.
But it seems like every other week this offense struggles mightily which will harm them in the long run if they don’t find consistent play.
Next game: vs. LSU
My prediction: Win 32-28
