College Football Top 25: Recapping Week 7, previewing Week 8
By Mitch Kaiser
8. Oklahoma State (6-0)
Week 7 result: Defeated Texas 32-24
It was the second straight week that Texas had an absolute implosion to a team from Oklahoma. This time it was a 14-point comeback from Oklahoma State to beat the Longhorns.
The Cowboys’ defense actually came up big in this one limiting Texas in the second half and coming up with two critical interceptions. The offense didn’t have many big plays but did enough to win. They mostly pounded the run with Jaylen Warren leading the way with 33 carries for 193 yards.
I would say Oklahoma State owes this one to their new starting kicker, Tanner Brown, who was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals. The Cowboys couldn’t capitalize in the red zone and had to kick more than they would have liked, but hey at least he made them.
That’s all Oklahoma State cares about as they are one of the two remaining unbeaten teams in the Big 12.
Next game: vs. Iowa State
My prediction: Win 24-23
9. Michigan State (7-0)
Week 7 result: Defeated Indiana 20-15
This was an ugly game all around in Bloomington. Both teams threw two interceptions and had very poor offensive performances. The Spartans only had one offensive touchdown the entire game. The other touchdown was a pick-six from linebacker Cal Haladay in the first quarter.
If you’re a fan, you would’ve loved this game if you enjoy defense. In fact, you can credit Michigan State’s whole defense for winning them this football game because the offense didn’t do them any favors.
The Spartans are still undefeated so they have to be happy about that. But this was not a convincing win by any means, especially against Indiana’s backup quarterback. I’ll go out on a limb and say that if Michael Penix Jr. was healthy in this one, Indiana would have pulled off the upset.
Next game: BYE
10. Oregon (5-1)
Week 7 result: Defeated Cal 24-17
Speaking of ugly wins, we now move onto Oregon. They had one of the ugliest wins of the weekend beating California by a whopping seven points.
You would have expected Oregon to come out firing as they were on a bye last week and were looking to shake off that loss to Stanford. But that was not the case at all. The Ducks struggled early, fumbling the ball twice in the first half. They were even losing at one point in the fourth quarter before Anthony Brown took over for two big drives to lead a comeback.
Travis Dye is now the featured running back as starter CJ Verdell is out for the season. He made the most of his opportunity in this one going for 145 rushing yards with another 73 yards through the air.
Next game: vs. UCLA
My prediction: Lose 33-26
