College Football Top 25: Recapping Week 7, previewing Week 8
By Mitch Kaiser
11. Iowa (6-1)
Week 7 result: Lost to Purdue 24-7
All of Iowa’s flaws finally came to fruition and their luck ran out on Saturday. There was no excuse for the Hawkeyes to lose this game playing at home and coming off of a big win. Purdue was not viewed as a challenging opponent either as Iowa was favored by 11. But the second-ranked team was stunned in front of their home crowd and their offense was absolutely shut down.
This was the first game this season that Iowa did not record an interception on defense. Instead, it was the opposite and they were the ones throwing the interceptions. Spencer Petras threw four picks which is just unacceptable.
Safety Riley Moss’ injury appears to have a bigger effect on this Hawkeye defense than expected as they got torched through the air. Iowa now enters a bye week at the perfect time where they need to regroup and get it together before traveling to Wisconsin in two weeks.
Next game: BYE
12. Ole Miss (5-1)
Week 7 result: Defeated Tennessee 31-26
The Ole Miss vs. Tennessee game was one of the most heated games that I’ve seen in college football in recent memory. There were fans literally throwing items on the field at the Ole Miss players and coaches. That’s pretty embarrassing and the Tennessee fans ought to be ashamed of themselves.
At least the Rebels were able to shut them up by pulling off a close win on the road.
Matt Corral would be my vote for Heisman right now if the season ended today. There hasn’t yet been a player who’s separated themselves from the rest. But I think Corral has meant the most to his team and has put up some gaudy numbers both throwing and running the ball. I mean he almost had 200 rushing yards in this game and isn’t even known for being a running quarterback.
Corral finished with a PFF grade of 89.0. He’s got some tougher competition coming up but if he continues this type of play, I feel like he should be the favorite for the Heisman Trophy.
Next game: vs. LSU
My prediction: Win 40-32
13. Notre Dame (5-1)
Week 7 result: BYE
The Fighting Irish were off this week and moved up one spot in the poll. They got an extra week to prepare for their rival USC. They welcome the Trojans to South Bend next Saturday in a game where both teams have underperformed this year and are looking to prove themselves.
Next game: vs. USC
My prediction: Win 30-24
