Michigan Football: 3 takeaways from win over Northwestern
3. Offensive stars shined in Ann Arbor
Michigan is a team that knows its strengths and plays up to them rather than try to switch it up. Their rushing attack ranks 6th best in the FBS coming into today, so if it isn’t broke don’t fix it.
Both of Michigan’s star running backs carried the offense for today. Hassan Haskins carried the ball 22 times for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Blake Corum got some receiving work mixed in and finished the day with 20 total touches for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
Haskins and Corum have been a fantastic 1-2 punch for Michigan football and provide different skill sets that have been giving Big Ten DC’s nightmares.
The Wolverines also got a nice day from Cornelius Johnson who is evolving into a weapon for the Wolverines early in 2021. Johnson had just 3 catches for 30 yards, but also contributed a blocked punt which allowed Michigan to effectively close out this game.
Michigan fans were also treated to another JJ McCarthy appearance, as the true freshman was able to carry the ball twice for 36 yards. McCarthy was also able to display his ability to throw on the run.
Cade McNamara played a strong steady game, but it will be interesting to see how long he holds on to the job with games against Michigan State, Penn State, and Ohio State on the horizon. McNamara has been a steady presence, but has not been able to connect on big plays.
